Within a period of a week, two private companies and an individual were levied with compound fines after they were caught disposing of rubbish in public areas which is an offence under the Minor Offences Act.

Under Chapter 30, Section 12 (1) of the Minor Offences Act, any person or company found to have dumped rubbish in a public place can be slapped with a compound fine of not more than $500. If the compound fine is not settled, the matter will be referred to court where a first-time offender will, upon conviction, be slapped with a $1,000 fine. A repeat offender could be fined $3,000 and sentenced to a maximum of three months' jail.
