Somerset's hopes of forcing a fourth Championship win of the season were dented by an unbeaten stand of 148 between former England men Chris Read and Samit Patel.

After amassing 517 against Nottinghamshire in their own first innings, they reduced the title favourites to 130-5. But the visitors closed on 278-5 and need 90 more to avoid the follow-on after a grey day at Taunton.

Again it was Murali Kartik who led the way. The left-arm spinner was brought on in only the 12th over and he got the breakthrough with his fifth ball.
