Global energy in numbers 2,25bn t of energy (crude oil, nuclear power, coal, natural gas and renewable sources) were consumed in China in 2009, making it the world's biggest consumer. 4% more energy was consumed in China than in the US, though China disputes this. The US has been the biggest energy consumer for over 100 years. 3 times more energy is still used in the US than in China, on a per capita basis. China's per capita consumption is on par with the global average. 19m barrels/day of oil are consumed by the US, the highest in the world, with China second at 9,2m b/d. 65GW was China's total electricity capacity in 1980.
