The compact 4-cylinder has various applications, but when outfitted for automobiles, the mechanism will be connected to the car's crankshaft in either of two configurations: an inline engine, with the cylinders mounted on a straight line; and a flat-4 model, in which two sets of cylinders are arranged on either side of the central crankcase.
