ANORTH East explorer is among the world-renowned academics to be honoured by Durham University this week.

Durham-born Robert Swan OBE received an honorary degree from the institution yesterday in the first of a series of graduation ceremonies to be held this week.

Robert, who was the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles, studied ancient history at Durham University and he has now been made an honorary Doctor of Science. The degree ceremonies, held in Durham Cathedral, run until Friday and each honorary degree is being presented by Chancellor Bill Bryson.
