Strike 'hurt' Gold One but was 'necessary' SIMON MUNDY Contributing Writer GOLD One CEO Neal Froneman said yesterday that a four-week strike at the company's flagship Modder East mine had been necessary to establish a stable relationship with trade unions, as the company reported that output had returned to levels seen immediately before the strike.

A wage dispute saw workers at the mine, 30km from Johannesburg, down tools in late March. The strike ended a month later after Gold One and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) reached a three-year wage agreement, which included the granting of a R400 monthly living-out allowance for workers.
