Section: General News - For the last time as head of State, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Saturday led the nation in celebrating Philippine independence.
At historic Rizal Park in Manila, the Philippine capital, she and other dignitaries gathered in front of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal's monument for the 7 a.m. flag raising activity that traditionally kicks off the country's annual Independence Day celebration.
Dignitaries present at the flag-raising event included Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Delfin Bangit and National Historical Institute (NHI) chief Prof. Ambeth Ocampo.
