Confidence down as recovery slows Economics Editor BUSINESS confidence fell unexpectedly in the second quarter of this year, led by a plunge in the mood within the retail and new-vehicle industry and signalling that the pace of SA's recovery has slowed, a key survey showed yesterday.
A quarterly index from the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) and Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) slipped by seven points to 36 in that period, taking it further below the neutral level of 50. RMB described the drop as sobering, but said it should be put into the context of the biggest surge in its business confidence index (BCI) in 15 years during the previous quarter.
