A former UN official tells Al-Jazeera TV on 1 May that the UN Security Council resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) without including human rights monitoring in the mandate reflects the lack of international will to push for a "final settlement" to the dispute in the northwest African territory.

The resolution, not using the phrase "human rights", has deepened divisions between the two parties to the dispute: Morocco and Polisario Front independence movement, according to Al-Jazeera TV. Morocco strongly opposed any such reference while Polisario has pushed for its inclusion as part of MINURSO's mandate.
