Koobi used to be the poor-man's fish, but since it shed its local name for 'Tilapia' it has become the toast of celebrities and a never-to-be missed item on the menu of most eateries in Ghana. With its soaring popularity has come a huge hype in the price of the fish, but a scientific break-through by the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) could boost production and drive down the price.

The new breed of tilapia is said to grow 30% quicker than those in the wild. The principal investigator of the research project, Dr. Felix Y. Klenam Attipoe is reported as affirming that "under cage culture …
