Mr Cable said: "Gordon Brown did make that awful slip up.
"It showed him at his worst, being rather two-faced."
He added: "The results that are starting to come through show that this election will be between my party and the Conservatives."
Mr Cable said he would be prepared to be Chancellor to a Prime Minister from a different party in the event of a hung Parliament.
He added voters should not fear a hung parliament as many countries had political systems which meant parties had to work together.
Head boy Louis Wood, 17, from Skegby, said he was disappointed Mr Cable felt the number of university places could be cut.
