The health ministry is expected to oblige business enterprises to enforce a total ban on smoking in workplaces, it was learned Wednesday.

A Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry committee, which discusses how to prevent health hazards caused by secondhand smoke, drew up a draft report that incorporated the total ban.

The Labor Policy Council, an advisory panel to Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Akira Nagatsuma, will work out details of the smoking ban and submit a bill to revise the Industrial Safety and Health Law to the ordinary Diet session, probably next year.
