Joe Dowling did not name his starting pitcher until just before the Class 4A-District 10 title game.
The Lakewood Ranch High coach went with Brittany Kilduff over Huntyre Elling, who faced Braden River High the previous two meetings between the teams.
"She was loosest, so we went with her," Dowling said.
Kilduff pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts, as the Mustangs won their second district title and first since 2003 with a 5-1 victory over the Pirates on Friday night at Lakewood Ranch.
