2nd round of efforts to trim waste commences

The Government Revitalization Unit kicked off its second round of efforts to trim wasteful government spending Friday, this time focusing on projects conducted by independent administrative institutions.

These bodies are research offices and sections of ministries that were separated from the government after being given independent corporate status. The institutions, however, still receive government subsidies and have been criticized by the public for engaging in amakudari, the practice of employing retired government officials from ministries with which the institutions are linked.
