World Bank's SA loan in numbers US$3,75bn is the size of a controversial World Bank loan to Eskom approved last week. $3,05bn will be used to fund the 4800MW coal-fired Medupi power station.
$260m is allocated to a 100MW pilot wind-power project and a 100MW solar project. The remaining $485m is for low-carbon energy-efficiency projects, including a railway to transport coal to Medupi. $6bn is the extent of the funding window that Eskom could have access to from the World Bank. Of this, $1,25bn could be lent for emission-reduction projects.
