The most moving poems in Krueger's second collection (after Rebloom) are those about a daughter's cancer, which make up most of the first two sections and some of the last. Krueger brings the reader to a point where "this space cradles/brutal sounds of self." Sholem Asch said, "An illness is like a journey to a far country," and Krueger records a similar experience: "after the diagnosis/my daughter's hands / are starfish." Bleak as her main topic is, Krueger provides respite in the title poem, as she decides to "try the riding cure,/ let my girl mount a big horse." A …
