The Light Fantastic
My friend Jane had lived in her apartment for two years before she realized that something about it made her feel unattractive. Every night before she went out, she would curl her lashes, gloss her lips, fluff her hair, and leave slightly disheartened. Only when she visited another apartment in the building did she figure out what was wrong: The lighting above her bathroom mirror was ghoulish. It loomed overhead, casting Hitchcockian shadows under her eyes and nose. Night after night, she'd stare at herself in the mirror and ask, "Is this really what I look like?"
No, it isn't. Unless she were taken …
