Uganda has a deficit of over 1.56 million housing units, with rural areas being the most affected, the latest report on urban development indicates.
The rural areas have a shortage of over 1.29 million housing units, while urban areas have 211,000, the 2010 report from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, stated.
The report was issued at the on-going fifth World Urban Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It is estimated that Uganda has approximately six million households living in 4.5 million housing units. Kampala alone has an estimated 236,000 housing units and a shortage of 71,000 units.
