They both rely on local subsidies, a property tax in Sarasota County and a county-managed trust fund in Manatee, to at least partially cover indigent care.

Medicaid coverage for more low-income Americans and other provisions in the sweeping federal health care package headed for President Barack Obama's signature should affect those subsidies.

But whether the legislation will ease the burden on local taxpayers is not yet clear.

The legislation is intended to ensure that 95 percent of eligible Americans have coverage by 2014.
