Portugal "will be greatly affected by climate change" and the violent storm in Madeira [on 20 February] is just another indication of a global trend, according to Antonio Baptista, director of the US-based Science and Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation [and Prediction].

"No event on its own is a sign of climate change. It is not the first time it (a storm in Madeira) has happened. There are similar cases from 30 or 40 years ago. A vast series (of phenomena) can, however, be observed in the last few years (...) which demonstrates that the world is changing," …
