The China Soda Industry Association (CSIA) reports that some large soda ash producers in the country recorded losses of more than RMB Yuan 10 M in 2009, with some smaller producers having losses of over RMB Yuan 1 M. Although the adverse impacts of the financial crisis are disappearing, those caused by overcapacity remain a significant problem. Chinese capacity for soda ash reached 24 M tonne/y in 2009, although production totalled 20 M tonnes as a result of 4 M tonne/y of capacity being idled.
