Thailand: Surat Thani farmers threaten to blockage airport over land occupation dispute.

Section: General News - About 1,000 farmers from Phunphin district in SUrat Thani province are threatening to blockade Surat Thani airport if the government continues to allow a private company to occupy a palm plantation, the Bangkok Post reports.

The protesters, members of the Tapan Muang Mai Cooperatives, gathered at a provincial hall on February 8 to demand the immediate eviction of the company, Kasetakam Palm, from 4,600 rai it leased from the Treasury Department.

Chakrit Sripirommit, the cooperatives' chairman, said the lease expired on Jan 31 but the firm was allowed to remain on the land.
