RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIfication (RFID) is a technology that uses radio waves for identifying objects, persons, processes, transactions or events.

An RFID device works like a bar code or a magnetic strip on the back of a credit card or ATM card.

It gives a unique identifier for an object and must be scanned to retrieve the identifying information. An RFID device can work within a few feet (up to 20 feet for high-frequency devices) of the scanner.

The basic components of RFID are the RFID tag, RFID reader, air interface for wireless communications and software application.
