ProSiebenSat. 1 topper Thomas Ebeling pulled back on Thursday from his bombshell announcement a day earlier that the European broadcasting group was considering turning its free-to-air TV channels into pay outlets (Daily Variety, Oct. 28).

Following a deluge of criticism over the widely reported comments, Ebeling clarified his remarks on Thursday and said the group was considering adding new pay TV channels, especially abroad, and more video-on-demand and would not turn its free-to-air TV channels--including Sat.1, ProSieben and Kabel Eins--into pay outlets.

"The networks will remain free-to-air," Ebeling said.
