Rising concern over strong rand's toll on SA recovery Currency at highest level since mid-October, and more gains are expected MARIAM ISA Economics Editor THE rand scaled a six-week peak yesterday and looked set for more gains, fanning concern over the toll its strength may take on SA's hesitant economic recovery.

Gold prices hit a new record high for the second day in a row, while prices for platinum, silver and palladium rose, adding to the positive outlook for commodity-linked currencies like the rand.

The unit nudged to R7,28/$ its firmest level since mid-October and traded at R7,30/$ as local markets shut.
