Figures negate tall claims of women empowerment.

KOLKATA, 26 NOV: Almost 37 per cent women in West Bengal ~ who got married between 1996 and 2001 ~ were minors at the time of their wedding, Mr Biswanath Chowdhury, state women, child development and social welfare minister said quoting a survey report. He was speaking at a seminar organised by his department at a city hotel this morning.

Mr Chowdhury's statement has virtually demolished the tall claim of the Left Front (LF) that it has successfully generated social awareness and the status of women in West Bengal had improved. He maintained that social ills like child marriage could not be eliminated from the state due to lack of awareness …
