It might not sound very mysterious, but your videotape cartridge holds secrets, codes, and hidden messages. When you insert the cartridge into your camcorder, it magically transfers its secrets to the camcorder's electronic innards.

So what are these confidential tidbits? I've done some snooping around and asked some questions. I've worn my fedora and trench coat to get you the inside scoop. I've made a few calls and grilled a few videotape experts.

Camcorders can't read or write or tell jokes, but they have sensors that allow them to gather valuable information from the plastic cartridges that hold your videotape. Let's start with the secrets of VHS tape. How does your camcorder know when it's safe to record onto a tape and when it's not safe? It's simple. Look on the back of the tape, opposite the side that flips up.
