Ecuadoran and Colombian intelligence organizations managed to introduce at least 10 "human sources" or informants into the FARC between 2005 and 2008 to locate the armed group's main leaders along the common border.

In 2005 the Police Special Investigations Unit [UIES] commanded by Nelson Ortega contacted J.C.R.F., aka 'Pirata,' who concentrated on FARC second in command Raul Reyes, who was killed in a bombardment by Colombia's Armed Forces at Angostura (Sucumbios) on 1 March 2008.
