Women are three of the nine winners of the 2009 National Medal of Science, who went to the White House in October to receive their awards from President Barack Obama.

The medal is the "highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists, engineers and inventors." They are:

* Dr. Joanna Fowler, senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, whose work has advanced the understanding of the human brain and disease, including drug addiction
