Surprise trade surplus for SA Imports fall as local demand dwindles while higher exports are driven by Asian growth, writes SA's trade balance swung unexpectedly back into the black with a surplus of R3,87bn last month the biggest in nearly six years.
It was the fourth trade surplus in five months, spurred both by waning imports, which fell 1,65%, and a surge in exports, which climbed 12,8%, official data showed on Friday. Consensus forecasts had predicted a trade deficit of about R1bn after a R1,98bn shortfall during August, but the data are notoriously volatile.
