NEW YORK With impotence affecting one in five men in the United States, it is not surprising that Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra, the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction, has achieved such immediate success in the market.
Taken about an hour before anticipated sexual activity, the prescription tablet works naturally along with sexual stimulation. It is the first in a new class of medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors that improve blood flow to the penis.
Based on clinical trials involving more than 4,000 patients, Viagra was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction by the Food and Drug Administration in late March. In clinical trials it has restored sexual function in seven out of 10 men.
