Communities are to be consulted on proposals to merge schools in new buildings in two areas of the Highlands as part of the Scottish Government's primary school building programme, the Press and Journal can reveal.

It emerged yesterday that three Ross-shire schools and two at Fort William are candidates for amalgamation.

Education chairman Bill Fernie confirmed that his department was considering 'a range of possibilities' and that his committee would be asked, at its next meeting on November 12, to back a provisional submission to ministers.
