Africa - MTN subscriber base up 5% despite weak home market.

Africa and Middle East mobile operator MTN Group reported 108.466 million subscribers for the end of September, up 5 percent from June and up 19.6 percent in the year to date. The subscriber base in its home market South Africa declined to 16.419 million at 30 September, from 17.231 million at the end of June, following the start of Rica, a government subscriber registration drive, in August. The prepaid base fell by 6.2 percent to 14.67 million, while postpaid numbers were up 3.0 percent to 2.95 million. The current market uncertainty following the Rica implementation caused the company to cut its outlook for subscriber additions this year in South Africa, and MTN now hopes to merely …
