Even the softest and most accommodating people among those with a critical attitude to the regime are inclined to admit that the most recent elections were the apotheosis of mockery of the electoral system and the institution of parliamentarianism. In response to the numerous accusations, the authorities merely scowl menacingly and mumble that preparation for the election campaign should have been better and more monitors should have been sent to the polling stations. The government continues to merely play at honest elections, while the majority of our fellow citizens (according to some estimates, up to 80 per cent) steer away from the election games and do not go to the polling stations.
