Pennsylvania Capital, founded eight years ago, is thriving, but Pittsburgh is sitting out a national wave of bank startups.

Despite a host of bank startups across the country and the state, the face of Pittsburgh's market has remained remarkably unchanged.

Its most recent bank, Pennsylvania Capital Bank, celebrates its eighth anniversary next month. And it was the first new bank to open in the Pittsburgh region in the 30 preceding years.

While Pennsylvania Capital has been a very successful venture, it hasn't inspired others to follow. And no one's sure why. Since 1990, 11 new banks have launched in Pennsylvania, and more than 50 in the eastern United …
