United Nations/Thailand: Nations marks 60th year in Thailand.

Section: General News - The United Nations on October 26 marked its 60th year in Thailand and the growth of Bangkok as a regional hub for the UN system, The Nation reports.

Also a cause for celebration was the UN's 64th birthday, which fell on October 24.

Joining the ceremony were HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

In 1949, Bangkok became home to the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East, which later became the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap).

Today, the capital hosts 34 UN and affiliated offices.
