The local Blue Cross plan is one of several suitors for the troubled company.

Cincinnati's Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield is one of several insurers interested in purchasing troubled Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, viewing that state's largest insurer as a strong foothold into the region's health care market.

Massachusetts Blue Cross CEO William Van Faasen said the beleaguered company - which lost $90 million last year - is "unequivocally not for sale nor are we engaged in discussions."

But several health care companies, including Anthem, said they had approached the Massachusetts insurer about a possible sale.
