The bagel business is about a lot more than food, says the president of The Great Bagel and Coffee Co., based in Phoenix.
Gary Sandeen wants the bagel eatery chain to become known as the Phoenix joint, where customers can come in and be recognized.
If they have a custom of stopping in for a morning cup of coffee and a bagel when they're out walking the dog, the pet is welcomed with a dog biscuit - that sort of thing, Sandeen said.
"The main thing we push is we want to know everybody by name," he said. "We not only recognize the guests, but in many occasions we recognize the guests' pets."
The Great Bagel and Coffee Co. recently bought back its largest franchisee in Phoenix, who had eight operations. This brought 10 Phoenix area locations under company ownership and operation.
