South Florida is turning into a test center for doctors, hospitals and managed care companies that develop computers and software to track costs and care.

The region is popular for testing because it has more managed care providers than other parts of the United States, industry observers say.

As medical teams nationwide upgrade their offices with networking systems that can cost upwards of $1 million, health-care companies across the region develop products to tap into the burgeoning market.

The developers include Andrx Corp. (Nasdaq: ADRX) of Fort Lauderdale, ProxyMeal Inc. (Nasdaq: PILL) of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton Community Hospital, SmartMeal Healthcare Systems of Dania, and CDL Healthcare Systems of Miami Lakes.
