Beijing, Oct. 1 Kyodo - Japan's proposal for creating an "East Asian community" akin to the European Union has sparked an effective leadership race between Japan and China in shaping the future of the most dynamically developing region in the world.

The East Asian community concept has drawn attention after Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama floated it during a meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao in New York on Sept. 21, only five days after he took office and launched his Democratic Party of Japan-led administration.
