The Malindi Municipal Council will sack 170 casual workers in a bid to reduce a bloated workforce and eliminate ghost workers in the cash-stripped local authority.
In his first press conference since he was elected last month, Mayor Samson Mapinga said the council had too many casual workers who were draining council funds unnecessarily.
"The council requires only between 60 and 70 casual workers but there are 170 at the moment. We will remove them all," he said.
The council will then re-assess the situation in all departments before recruiting the required number.
