There was a depressing familiarity about President Jacob Zuma's upbeat assessment during this week's Southern African Development Community (Sadc) leaders' meeting in Kinshasa of Zimbabwe's progress during the six months since the unity government was formed.

Thabo Mbeki, architect of the so-called inclusive government in Harare, was also inclined to whitewash the news coming out of Zimbabwe, as if saying everything was on the right track would somehow make it so.
