Aug. 31--You'll be hearing a lot less of those pre-recorded pitches for everything from car insurance to mortgage services, as the federal government is hanging up on robocalling.

Starting Tuesday, businesses will need written permission from consumers in advance to solicit them with recorded telemarketing messages, nicknamed robocalls, said officials with the Federal Trade Commission. The rule applies even to people who are not on the federal Do Not Call Registry, which allows those who sign up to block sales calls.
