Aug. 20--HOUSTON -- Before Wednesday's game, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez wasn't prepared to name a starter for Friday's series opener in Atlanta. He did rule out one pitcher.

"It's definitely not Smoltz," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez's powers of persuasion weren't enough to land John Smoltz, who on Wednesday agreed to join the National League Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals. Smoltz is set to make his Cardinals debut as a starter Sunday at San Diego.

The Marlins wanted Smoltz as a starter as well. Gonzalez spoke with Smoltz before he made his decision and heard from him again once he settled on St. Louis. Money was not …
