Aug. 18--WEST PALM BEACH -- Palm Beach County commissioners today approved the selection of Steve Jerauld as the county's first new fire chief in 25 years. Longtime Fire Chief Herman Brice retired Friday and Jerauld was promoted from deputy chief. "I hope to do you proud," Jerauld, 52, told commissioners. "You have a fire department you can be very, very proud of." Jerauld became a firefighter in 1978 at the Military Park Fire Department, which covered the region west of West Palm Beach and Loxahatchee before merging with county Fire Rescue. Jerauld later rose to district chief and deputy chief under Brice.
