OSHA has launched its National Emphasis Program (NEP) for the chemical sector with an initial focus on facilities in New England, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest. OSHA says it may conduct NEP inspections elsewhere in the country, although those would be more likely to be the result of an accident or compliant.

Facilities that are covered by OSHA's process safety management (PSM) standard and those required to submit Risk Management Plans (RMP) to EPA are subject to the unannounced OSHA inspections.

OSHA will focus on facilities that use chlorine, including wastewater treatment sites, and those using ammonia, including fertilizer distributors.
