The children squealed with delight as Peter Pan led Wendy, Michael and John into the skies over London; they clung to their mums and dads as the scary crocodile lumbered across stage with a deep, throaty roar; and they cheered along with everyone else at the close of this remarkable, unique re-telling of JM Barrie's classic tale.

And for me, the spectacle was made even more interesting by the appearance of 25-year-old Notts-born actor David Poynor as Michael Darling, aged six. My brief was to assess his performance and, I have to say, his is a name to watch for in the future.

He shed the years so effectively I doubt it …
