Sanofi was a French pharmaceutical company created in 1973. During the same year, the cosmetics company L'Oreal purchased SynthAlabo to have a presence in the pharmaceutical industry.

In 1999, Sanofi merged with SynthAlabo to become sanofi-synthAlabo. Aventis Pharmaceutics also came into existence in the same year (1999) through the merger of the pharmaceutical business of Rhone Poulenc and Hoechst AG. Eventually in 2004, sanofi-synthAlabo merged with Aventis Pharmaceutics to form what is now sanofi-aventis, one of the world's leading healthcare companies and number 1 in Europe.
