A former Indian diplomat M. Bharthkumar in a recent article said that India began improving relations with the United States in an effort to thwart the Chinese strategy in the region.

The reciprocal interest displayed by the United States in cozying up to India had the same motive. However, India has not been able to make the best use of this opportunity as the Chinese have set up strong economic ties in Sri Lanka that is detrimental to India-United States interests and has made it difficult for both countries to attain their objective.

Sri Lanka is strategically located in the South Asian region and it has been blessed with a harbor with natural protection in Trincomalee. This has made the global powers eye the country.
