TAIWAN's President Ma Ying-jeou has set his sights on six "flagship" industries to propel his country's growth over the next decade - industries he believes will become the major ones of the world over the next five to 10 years.

Reflecting a deliberate strategy to steer the economy away from IT, which suffered the brunt of the global financial tsunami, his state funds and special support programmes are backing green energy, biotech, healthcare, high-end agriculture, tourism and cultural businesses such as traditional arts and even pop music.
